One of the questions we get asked the most is what our soap and candle-making process looks like, so today we thought we’d give you a tour of the creative steps we take to come up with a product our customers will love! The magic begins with an idea: It could be a scent or a season that captivates us. Once we have the idea, we start researching various oil blends and taking note of what is on-trend and seasonal. If it’s spring or summer, we will use lighter floral fragrances, while fall and winter products have a spicier, muskier touch.
Our oils are multi-layered, an important combination that brings harmony to the scent. The first impression you will have of a fragrance is always the top note, which we keep light, clean, and fresh. The middle note, interestingly, is often called the “heart note,” as it makes up the majority of each scent and is its heart! Finally, the bottom or base note is a bit heavier and longer lasting. But no matter which scent we create, we custom blend our oils to create that perfect fragrance, until it is just right. Once it is perfect, we begin crafting the product. For candles, we melt the soy and carefully blend in the fragrance oil. For soaps, we add the oil to the soap mixture and stir. Then, when the fats and lye have been blended together, we put in the color and scent for each type. Only then is the soap ready to be poured into the soap molds for curing. This method is called “Cold Process” and means that we never apply external heat to our soaps. Once the soaps are cut, we place them on a special drying tray containing slots that allow the air to circulate and draw the moisture out of the bar. Typically, it takes six weeks to cure completely, but this special tray cuts that time significantly, which means we can get the product to our customers sooner!
When we are first developing a new fragrance, we love to give that product away to friends and ask for their feedback. Once the product passes our customers’ approval, we introduce it to market. We have a signature line of scents, but we also love to introduce seasonal fragrances.
We love hearing from you, our Gypsy Darlings. If you have a favorite scent, please tell us. Who knows, we might just name it after you!
